The Lem Knowledge Graph Project: Integrating Publication Data and Cataloguing Correspondence

General information

The aim of the project is to develop a knowledge graph dedicated to the works of Stanisław Lem, with particular emphasis on compiling a complete list of all global editions of his texts. The main source of data will be databases that have been created over many years by Victor Yaznevich; these will be integrated with data from other external sources. In addition, the graph will include a partial catalog of Lem’s correspondence, focusing primarily on metadata related to letters that have already been published.

Leading researcher in the project

Jakub Gomułka

Jakub Gomułka

Professor at the AGH University of Krakow. By training a philosopher and computer scientist, his research engages with the thought of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Stanisław Lem, as well as with the application of artificial intelligence technologies — most notably knowledge graph technologies — in the humanities. He has served, among other roles, as co-editor of the two-volume anthology Filozoficzny Lem (Aletheia, 2021, 2025) and as organiser of the conference series 'Philosophy in the Works of Stanisław Lem'. He is the author or co-author of a number of articles devoted to various aspects of Lem's thought, including the recently published piece Z plastikowej Wenus na cyfrowe wydmy Regis III, which concerns the adaptation and gradaptation of the works of the author of Solaris.

Doctor of Technical Sciences (specialisation: computing). For many years he has worked as a translator of Stanisław Lem's short stories and discursive prose from Polish, German, and English into Russian and Belarusian, including Bomba megabitowa, Tajemnica chińskiego pokoju, Okamgnienie, the book-length interview Tako rzecze… Lem, Mój pogląd na literaturę, Sex Wars, and many others. A doctoral candidate in Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University since 2023. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Cognitive Science from the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (2018), a Master's degree in Philosophy from the University of Antwerp (2020), and a doctorate in Philosophy from Charles University in Prague (2024). His research focuses on the development of knowledge-based systems, with particular emphasis on graph-based data representation. He is especially interested in the intersection of machine learning methods and explicitly represented background knowledge, with the aim of creating intelligent technologies that promote human care and flourishing.

Szymon P. Kukulak

A literary scholar and game studies scholar, he is a Lecturer in the Department of Information Technologies and Media at the Faculty of Humanities, AGH University. Previously, he spent over a decade affiliated with the Faculty of Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University, where he completed degrees in Polish philology, physics, and astronomy. He completed his doctorate at the same institution, examining postwar Polish science fiction in terms of its rootedness in the science and technology of its era, with particular focus on the works of Stanisław Lem. To the latter he has devoted, in whole or in part, a number of scholarly articles. As a literary scholar, he has further examined the legacy of other Polish science fiction writers — including Jacek Dukaj — as well as foreign authors of speculative fiction, frequently analysing the connections between their prose and the actual scientific and technological sphere. He is currently investigating, among other things, the possibilities of modelling such relations — or, more broadly, the connections between literature and the real world — using the tools of digital humanities. As a game studies scholar, his work has encompassed historical strategy games and the application of postcolonial theory to their analysis.
